Asante Kente Cloth
Asante Kente Cloth
This fine example is one of our favourite pieces. Kente is woven on a horizontal strip loom, which produces a narrow band of cloth about four inches wide. Several of these strips are carefully arranged and hand-sewn together to create a cloth of the desired size. Most kente weavers are men.
Kente cloth designs vary, with the different designs, colours, and patterns each having their own special meanings and stories. But Kente cloth also reflects the history of the Ashanti people
We believe this cloth dates from the 1930’s and it is in remarkably good condition. There are some small holes, a few marks and some light fading on the edges. It’s a fantastic design in rich bright colours will make a fabulous wall hanging.
